Last week we discussed the cloud program Dropbox and its uses. This week we'll talk about another useful cloud program, Evernote. Since its inception since 2008, Evernote has become widely popular among students, teachers and professionals. Slightly similar to Dropbox, Evernote specializes in note-taking and archiving. If you are the type of person that loves making lists, or leaves post-it notes lying around everywhere, Evernote can help you out. Evernote has several distinguishable features that students could take advantage of, many of which can easily accommodate the modern student's lifestyle.
For starters, Evernote is a cross-platform app, meaning that everything you use is synched across all of your devices: your phone, computer, tablet, etc. For instance, if you are at school and you create a note on your tablet, it will be accessible on your phone in the car and will be ready and waiting on your computer when you get home. Evernote is compatible with several operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, OS X, Android and Google Chrome.
One of the key characteristics of Evernote is keeping up with all the things you tell yourself you need to remember throughout the day. Users can create not just text notes, but notes with pictures, voice memos, and entire web pages to review later. You sort or collect these notes into folders (which you can tag, comment, or share) and create notebooks to house specific folders. Having such a comprehensive archive means students can separate their coursework references and objectives from any of the random things they experience or think of that they want to remember later.
Evernote can be a student's best friend. With email integration and the ability to share your notes with others, a student can complete an entire research project like a professional. A user can store receipts, recipes, important documents and memos that they'll never have to struggle looking for again.
I encourage those who have poor organizational skills to try Evernote. The more you use it, the more your life is simplified. Below is a video from Evernote's website: www.evernote.com.

This would be an effective tool for me, especially because I don't like the clutter of paper and that fact that it would allow easy access to retrieve notes. And because of its synched feature, I don't have to worry about losing the information; if for some reason one of my devices gets lost, damaged, or stolen. I use notes often, especially for reminders of appointments, grocery lists, etc., so this will be valuable for me.
ReplyDeleteThis program is great. Taking someone's "clutter"--or as I call it.."spread-out-organization"--and putting it into one, easily accessible spot is brilliant. They seem to still give you the option of making multiple small notes, but Evernote keeps it all in one location and has it all organized. This is not only attractive to those who are already organized, but it is also ideal for those who need a little extra help with condensing our organization. Being able to access information from multiple devices makes the program that much more appealing.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds so convenient! I have different notes on all of my devices and I can never remember which note is on which device. I'm definitely going to have to try this out and finally have some organization in my life! Great article!
ReplyDeleteI am definitely going to try this app. I really need the organization. I always think of things during the day that I need to do and then forget later. This app seems like the perfect way to organize this! I always have my laptop or phone with me, so to have something to remind me of things I need to do/read later is perfect. I love lists, so having this app would help me keep everything I need to do in one place! Thanks for the info!
ReplyDeleteI will be taking a more in depth look at this app. It sounds very interesting, I love being able to have access to all my personal things in one place. I don't like messes or papers running around everywhere. If I'm able to have access to my school notes, receipts and my calendar all at once, will definitely get this.
ReplyDeleteWhat great information you provided. I have post it notes throughout my home and car. Great way to keep everything organized. Is there a feature that allows you to translate voice memo into text? Is there a charge for this app?
ReplyDeleteI believe most of the note taking apps are free, including this one.
DeleteThanks for the great post! I've never heard of Evernote before and this would be a great tool for me to use to organize. I love post its and I tend to put it on everything, but with post its you can easily lose track of it. I like that with Evernote it helps you organize everything and you won't ever have to lose it. Not to mention you can easily access it through multiple devices, which I think that is pretty cool. I will definitely download this app right now and give it a try. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I hope it works out for you!
DeleteAll the cloud computing information your group has been posting has really been interesting and I'm seeing ways it can improve life at work and at home. It looks like the last three posts have shown different organization tools for the cloud: Google Drive, DropBox, and Evernote. It would probably be too complicated to add as a simple comment reply, but it would be really helpful for those of us considering one of these applications to see a list of pros and cons or comparisons for each one. Maybe that can be a later post??? Great job! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the suggestion! Maybe we can do that for our final post!
DeleteI usually just use the Notes app on my iPhone, but I like the possibility of saving web pages and photos too so I will check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.
ReplyDeleteI think people who could benefit from apps like these the most are usually intimidated by them. It can be hard to start a new habit, but if they force themselves to rely on Evernote, it becomes their personal assistant. It simplified my classwork and studying notes and I kind of improved without even noticing it. You just have to stick with it!
ReplyDeleteI'd never heard of Evernote but I will definitely check this out. This seems like a great way to keep your messages on all forums. Let's just face it, paper notes are outdated. Most of us keep our alerts on our phone but it would be nice to have them connected to all of our devices.
ReplyDeletethis is a very informative post. Thank you for posting it. I have heard of Evernote but never knew how powerful it could be actually. For me, it is the best communication tools for business minded people. No matter where you whenever you have a great idea and you have access to the internet, you can access the internet and jot down your thoughts. What an easy way to help everyone get organized and productive.
